(Un)comfortably numb?

The flickering images from the screen project shadows on my face.
Their messages filter through my brain – settling uncomfortably on my heart.
7.0 magnitude earthquake hits Haiti – thousands feared dead;
Two dead following drive-by shooting;
Struggling homeowners not getting help fast enough;
Court documents reveal Sheri Coleman lived in fear of her husband;
Trooper’s partner laments lack of legal protection for gay couples;
Humane Society rescues 13 neglected horses.
“How sad”, I exclaim. “Why is the world this way?”
Winter weather is on its way again. It looks like we are in for snow.
“Jimmy, it’s going to be cold. You better bring a coat.”
Images flicker. The stories of life’s tragedies loosen their grip on my heart.
“Hey, what’s for dinner?”
Flicker, flicker. Fade to black.

  1. Interestingly enough, I think I wrote a prequel to this one. I will try to get to a proper computer and put it on later today.

  2. Pancho, that would be truly awesome if you had a prequel to this.

  3. This actually brought tears to my eyes. We are all so lucky to have who and what we have. We seem to lose sight sometimes of the true reality that is happening, even now. Dana

  4. I love how this shows the pang of sadness we feel as we watch horrible things happening to others but are still able to shake it off as quickly as we do and simply return to our daily lives.
    It almost sends a message that says "where would we be without the world's horrific events?".
